Privacy Policy for Notch
This privacy policy applies to the Notch habit tracker app ("the App") for mobile devices, made by Shivam ("we", "us"). Notch is free, has no ads, and requires no account.
The short version
- Your habits stay on your device. Their names, emoji, notes and history are never sent to us or anyone else.
- The iOS app sends anonymous usage statistics to Google Analytics for Firebase (for example, "a habit was notched" or "the Year tab was opened"). This helps us see which features people use. It never includes what your habits are called.
- The Android app sends a crash report to Firebase Crashlytics if the App crashes, so we can fix the bug. Crash reports never include your habits.
- No ads, no advertising identifier (IDFA), no tracking across other apps or websites, and no selling of data.
1. Data that stays on your device
Everything you create in Notch is stored only in the App's local storage on your phone:
- habit names, emoji, colors, goals, time-of-day sections and reminder times
- the days and times you notch each habit, streaks and streak freezes
- day notes
- your settings (theme, sounds, widgets, Live Activity)
The home screen widgets, lock screen widgets and Live Activity read this data directly on your device. We have no servers that store it and no way to see it.
2. Data sent to Google (iOS app)
The iOS app uses two Firebase services from Google.
Google Analytics for Firebase receives:
- App usage events. These include creating, editing, deleting and notching habits, completing all habits for the day, unlocking a streak milestone, switching tabs or theme, opening the widget or story studio, sharing a card (and where: Instagram, share sheet or clipboard), and tapping an update prompt. Habit events carry only a random habit ID and numbers such as the daily goal, progress and streak. They never include the habit's name, emoji or notes.
- Device and app information that Firebase collects automatically: an app-instance identifier generated by Firebase, device model, operating system version, app version, language, and approximate country or region derived from the network connection. The IP address is used for this lookup and is not stored by Google Analytics.
Firebase Remote Config downloads app settings, such as update notices, maintenance notices and feature switches. To do this it uses a Firebase installation identifier. It does not send your habit data.
We use this information only to understand how the App is used, fix problems and decide what to improve. We do not use it for advertising, we do not combine it with other data to identify you, and we do not sell it. Google processes it under its own privacy policy: Firebase privacy and Google Privacy Policy.
2a. Crash reports and app settings (Android app)
The Android app uses Firebase Crashlytics from Google. If the App crashes, it sends a crash report the next time it opens. A crash report contains:
- where in the App's code the crash happened (a stack trace) and the time of the crash
- device model, Android version, App version, free memory and disk space, and whether the device is rooted
- a random installation identifier generated by Crashlytics, so repeated crashes on one device can be grouped
Crashlytics also records when a session starts, so we can see what share of sessions crash. Crash reports never include habit names, emoji, notes or history. We use them only to find and fix bugs. The Android app does not send usage analytics.
Like the iOS app, the Android app also uses Firebase Remote Config to download app settings such as update notices and maintenance notices. It uses a Firebase installation identifier for this and does not send your habit data. If an update is offered, the App may ask Google Play whether a newer version is available.
3. Permissions
- Notifications (optional): for reminders you set. Reminders are scheduled on your device.
- Add to Photos (optional): requested only if you choose "Save Image" for a story or recap card. The App can add images to your library but cannot read your photos.
- Live Activities (optional, iOS): shows today's progress on your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island. You can turn it off in the App or in iOS Settings.
4. Sharing you choose to do
When you share a story or recap card, the image you created goes only where you send it: Instagram Stories, the share sheet, or your clipboard. That service handles it under its own policy. We don't receive a copy.
5. Retention and deletion
- Delete a habit in the App to remove it and its history from your device. Deleting the App removes all of its data.
- Analytics events are kept by Google for the retention period set in our Firebase project, at most 14 months, and then deleted automatically. Deleting the App resets its analytics identifier.
- Crash reports are kept by Google for 90 days and then deleted automatically.
- To have analytics data or crash reports associated with your device deleted, email us (below) and we'll help.
6. Children
Notch is suitable for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children. The analytics described above contain no names or contact details.
7. Changes
If we change what the App collects, we'll update this page and the effective date before that version ships.
